French businessman and former Olympique de Marseille chairman Tapie has died By Reuters

PARIS (Reuters) – Bernard Tapie was a French businessman who also served as president of Olympique de Marseille (OM). He led Olympique de Marseille to 1993 Champions League glory.

The death was announced by Tapie’s family and French politicians.

Bernard Tapie has passed away. “Olympique de Marseille was deeply saddened by his passing,” OM said. In a statement, OM explained that Bernard Tapie will “leave a tremendous void in Marseillais hearts and will forever be part of the legend of club.”

Jean Castex, Prime Minister, had previously paid tribute to Tapie in 1990, when he described him as a “fighter”.

Tapie had suffered from stomach cancer over many years.

In 1986, he became a charismatic leader of Marseille. From 1994 to 1994, OM defeated AC Milan 1-0 at the Champions League final. Later, he was sentenced to jail for match fixing in the French First Division.
