German liberals press conservatives to say if they want to govern By Reuters

© Reuters. Germany’s Liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP leader Christian Lindner, along with Greens Party co-leaders Robert Habeck, and Annalena Bock, make a statement to media about exploratory negotiations for a new government in Berlin.

BERLIN, (Reuters) – Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP), pressed Chancellor Angela Merkel to clarify whether she really wants to be the leader of a new government. The FDP is increasing pressure on Merkel’s would-be partners in order to get them to agree to the leadership.

Armin Laschet is the conservative’s chancellor candidate. He said that he would like to form a government despite his Christian Democrats bloc (CDU and CSU) falling to an unprecedented low in Sunday’s election.

Markus Soeder of the Bavarian CSU said that the Social Democrats (SPD), a centre-left party which won the most votes, would be most likely to form a government.

The election result was close, and no party got an overall majority. This has prompted complex negotiations that may last several weeks or even months. FDP, Greens, and other parties could be kingmakers.

Christian Lindner, FDP leader, stated to Bild am Sonntag that the CDU and CSU need to clarify whether or not they want to be leaders of a government.

“Some CDU’s words speculate that negotiations avec the SPD should fail prior to the Union comes back in play,” he stated, speaking of the CDU/CSU alliance commonly known as “the Union”. This cannot be applied to our country.”

The business-friendly FDP and the ecologist Greens, from opposite ends of the political spectrum and at odds https://reut.rs/3uiuoJG on a range of issues, have moved centre stage after the SPD’s narrow election victory – its first since 2012.

CDU/CSU and the SPD are both trying to win the support of the smaller parties in order to secure a majority in parliament for a coalition. According to polls, voters prefer that the SPD leads it.

While the Greens want the “kingmakers” smaller than the SPD to join forces, the FDP seems closer to conservatives.

On Sunday, both the FDP (the conservatives) and FDP will have exploratory talks. Also, on Sunday, both the SPD as well the FDP are due to meet.

Merkel has been in power since 2005 and plans to quit once a new government is established. She will continue her duties until then.
