Over the weekend, large amounts of oil began to wash ashore off Huntington Beach, California, after an oil-rig pipeline was breached.
Katrina Foley from Orange County, said that an estimated 126,000 barrels of crude oil were spread to an oil slick that covered approximately 13 miles.
She stated that the spillage had irreversible effects on the environment. According to her, the oil spillage occurred due to an accident at Elly’s oil rig. The breach reached all the way from Huntington Beach Pier to Newport Beach.
A local air show was cancelled and beaches closed for swimming.
Coast Guard officials flew in planes with state and local agencies to examine the damage and hired contractors for cleanup.
