KABUL, (Reuters) – As Afghanistan faces a major humanitarian crisis, Nor Agha Nori sleeps in a makeshift tent.

Nori is originally from Northern Takhar Province. His seven children are part of hundreds of thousands of others, including many of the most vulnerable, who were forced to leave their homes by the Taliban.

Nori said Monday that he had not yet received assistance from any person, while cradling the two sleepy children in his arms.

There are seven of us in our family. We have not eaten lunch or dinner. “We appeal to the United Nations and international community for assistance as quickly as possible.”

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2001, poverty and hunger have increased. This is despite Afghanistan already being hit by drought and COVID-19.

According to Filippo Grandi (U.N High Commissioner for Refugees), half a million Afghans have fled Afghanistan over the past months. This number will rise if schools, health care, and economic services are cut off.

UN data shows that more than half are children.

Taliban has asked Afghans not to leave their homeland and to stay in Afghanistan. Although it has said that international aid is welcome, many donors stopped providing assistance to the Taliban after they came to power.

“Who’s the person who looks after the poor?” Zia Gul is a native Kunduz woman who now sleeps in Kabul’s park.

We are all homeless, our group consists of four or five families.
