Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp down in global outage By Reuters

(Reuters). Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:). According to Downdetector.com outage tracking site Downdetector.com the apps of Instagram and WhatsApp, including their popular photo-sharing app, Instagram, went down for thousands of users.

Reuters couldn’t confirm immediately the issues affecting these services. However, the Facebook error message suggested that there was an error in Domain Name System (DNS).

DNS is what allows web addresses take users to their destination. Similar outage in cloud company Akamai Technologies Inc (NASDAQ) took down several websites during July.

Downdetector tracks outages only by collecting status reports from several sources. This includes user submitted errors. It showed that there had been more than 50,000 instances of users reporting problems with Instagram and Facebook. This outage could be more widespread.

Messenger went down for close to 3,000 users while the instant messaging service WhatsApp of the social-media giant WhatsApp suffered a similar downtime.

“We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment,” the messaging platform’s official Twitter handle said https://twitter.com/WhatsApp/status/1445060216161116168. “We are working to restore normalcy and will update you as soon we can.”

Facebook has not yet responded to Reuters’s request for a statement.
