Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin launching William Shatner on next spaceflight

Science fiction could soon be a reality as William Shatner, the crewed spaceflight’s next commander, is set for launch Jeff Bezos’Blue Origin.

Blue Origin will fly Captain Kirk, a Canadian actor who was famously featured in Star Trek TV series as one of its passengers aboard the New Shepard rocket.

Launch is scheduled for October 12. Blue Origin’s vice-president of mission and flight operations Audrey Powers will join the flight. The crew of four is completed by Glen de Vries, co-founder Medidata and Chris Boshuizen.

Blue Origin will broadcast the mission live via webcast, called NS-18. Coverage is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. ET. ET on October 12.

The New Shepard flight on Blue Origin takes about 10 minutes, from liftoff until landing. A reusable rocket lifts the capsule to 80 km above the U.S. border of space. The crew and spacecraft remain suspended in microgravity until returning to earth under parachutes.
