BOSTON (Reuters). LUFTHANSA announced Sunday that it had agreed to rent four Airbus A350-900 long haul passenger planes. This is in addition to taking over older aircraft left behind as airlines restructure balance sheets following the coronavirus crisis.

Industry sources claim that planes can be leased at low rates right now as airlines review their inventory.

The announcement by German flag carrier Carsten Spohr, chief executive, was made at an airline conference that had been dominated by discussions about emissions and industry losses as a result of the pandemic.

Spohr stated that “Fleet Modernization is, in my opinion, one pillar to deal with the sustainability issues,” Spohr said during a sideline meeting of the IATA group of airlines.

These aircraft were initially intended to be used by Philippine Airlines. It has been refining its fleet. They will now be available for purchase in the first quarter of next year, according to someone familiar with this deal.

Lufthansa announced that their arrival would accelerate the replacement of fuel-efficient Airbus A340-606 and Boeing (NYSE) 747-441 jets.

Lufthansa stated that its A350 fleet will be increased by four additional planes.

Spohr expressed concern that the slow opening of China’s borders amid tight coronavirus travel restrictions would hurt German airlines’ recovery.

“We aren’t just slowing down our recovery in Lufthansa, that is also my concern. We are also slowing the recovery of economic relations with China and Germany,” said he.

China reduced its transport connections with countries in response to the coronavirus. It first appeared in Wuhan (China) in late 2019. Since then, it has spread all over the world.

No matter their nationality, visitors to China must meet strict requirements before they can travel. This includes multiple medical screenings and tight quarantine regulations upon arrival.

Both Chinese and non-Chinese airlines could have their flights temporarily suspended if there are a few infected passengers upon arrival to China.
