(Reuters) – Facebook (NASDAQ) stated Tuesday that the network that links its data centers caused the global system to collapse for six hours Monday. This prevented billions from accessing the site.

Facebook posted in a blog that its engineers had issued an order to “effectively disconnect all Facebook data centers worldwide”

Access to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp was temporarily halted due to this outage.

The company stated that employees were also unable to access internal tools such as those used by Facebook employees for correcting these issues.

Facebook stated that its program auditor tool was affected by a bug. It failed to prevent the command from causing the outage.
