LONDON, (Reuters) – The number of new British cars registered in the UK fell by 35% last month to 214,000 units. This was according to preliminary data from Tuesday’s industry. It marked the lowest September since at least 23-years.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the automotive industry continues to suffer from a shortage of semiconductors that are used for the production of automobiles.
The SMMT reported that more than 32,000 batteries-powered vehicles were registered in the month ending December due to panic buying at petrol stations. This is a record.
British license plates indicate the vehicle’s age and are updated every September and March. This means that these months can be a busy time for registrations, as car buyers love to display the latest model.
The SMMT will release final August numbers at 0800 GMT Tuesday.
