BRUSSELS, (Reuters) – The European Commission announced Wednesday that it will increase and expand existing support for wine, fruit, and vegetable sector after this year’s heatwaves, flooding, and spring frosts.
Janusz Wojciechowski, Agriculture Commissioner, said that the problems in the sector had been compounded by a challenging 2020 because of the COVID-19 crises.
He stated that these much-needed assistance measures would (relieve), producers throughout the EU in these difficult times on top of those already proposed in 2020 and expanded in 2021.”
The EU’s harvest insurance contribution has increased from 70% to 80% for wine. Furthermore, the EU has doubled its support to help cover mutual fund set-up costs.
Producor organizations will receive compensation from the EU for fruits and vegetables equal to at least 85 percent of their production last year, regardless of whether this year’s value was lower.
If production falls below 35% in the last year because of natural disasters or climatic conditions, compensation will be offered.
With measures for 2020, including additional funds to support vineyard conversion and green harvesting, the Commission already supports the wine sector. Others measures were also helpful for fruit and vegetable farmers.
According to the Commission, these flexibility measures would be extended up until October 15, 2022.
