Following Wednesday’s party approval, the Social Democratic Party (Greens), and the pro-business Free Democrats could initiate formal coalition talks to forge the next German government.

On Wednesday morning the SPD announced that Olaf Scholz was the party’s candidate to become the next chancellor. This puts the SPD one step closer in succeeding Angela Merkel, and in leading Europe’s largest economy into the future.

The Greens’ co-leader Robert Habeck told reporters earlier Wednesday that his party “is proposing to the
FDP and SPD to meet together, then to move from exploratory talks to three-way discussions,” Reuters reported.

For the moment, this is a suggestion to the FDP. “Let’s wait to see what they do,” Habeck stated, adding that the Greens and the FDP had policy differences. “Many issues have yet to be discussed.”

Christian Lindner, FDP’s leader, said shortly afterward that his party had taken up the Greens’ proposal for three way talks with SPD. Reuters reports that he offered to open talks on Thursday.

Talks continue

Informal coalition negotiations have already taken place between FDP (Greens) and FDP over the past week, with FDP as the main opponent and both SPD and Christian Democratic Union – Christian Social Union. However, no decision was made on Wednesday as to which party would enter formal negotiations.

After the election FDP and the Greens were positioned as “kingmakers”, with no single party gaining a majority to govern.

With 25.7% of the votes, the most popular vote went to SPD, the center-left party. provisional results showCDU-CSU won 24.1%. While the FDP received 11.5% of the vote and the Greens 14.8%, they were able to influence a coalition by supporting it as a junior partner. provisional results show.

On Sunday, the SPD already stated that it is ready to start three-way talks with two of its smaller partners. The FDP also stated Tuesday that it would need to take some time for its position to be reflected on. The FDP has always supported possible cooperation with the CDU-CSU. However, this stance has changed in recent times.
