WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Jonathan Kanter is the third progressive named by President Joe Biden to the top U.S. antitrust positions. He pledged Wednesday that he would enforce antitrust laws in Big Tech, agriculture and pharmaceutical prices.

Senator Judiciary Committee lawmakers did not concentrate on Big Tech markets which are receiving a great deal of attention. Instead, they asked questions about various industries. Kanter responded to each question by promising vigorous antitrust enforcement.

Kanter was enthusiastic when Kanter was asked his opinion on the labor market. Non-compete agreements have been criticized for making it more difficult for workers to quit their job for better wages or conditions.

He stated that he had once been confirmed as being “eager” for the topic to be addressed.

Kanter, if confirmed by the Senate as anticipated, will assume the presidency of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. This is amid demands for tighter enforcement and criticisms directed at Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:) Google. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ.com Inc, Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ.com Inc) and Apple Inc. Both companies vigorously deny any wrongdoing.

Google has been sued by the department and Apple is being investigated for violating antitrust laws.

Kanter spent many years representing Google’s rivals. The Justice Department filed suit last year against Kanter alleging it violated antitrust laws by trying to impede rivals.

Prior to the Biden administration, two tech-savvy antitrust activists were chosen for the National Economic Council by Tim Wu and Lina Kan as Federal Trade Commission Commissioners.
