QUETTA (Reuters) – At least 20 people died and over 200 were injured in the earthquake that struck south Pakistan on Thursday, according to Disaster Management Authority Director General Naseer Nasir.
In the wee hours of Thursday morning, a earthquake measuring magnitude 5.7 struck while many people were asleep. The majority of the deceased were children and women, according to rescuers.
According to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), it was fairly shallow, at only 20 kms (12 mi), with an epicenter approximately 102 km (62 mi) east of Quetta.
There were more than 100 collapsed mud houses, many of which had been damaged or destroyed by the government. Sohail Awar, the deputy commissioner of Harnai said hundreds were left homeless.
A social media post showed photos of houses shaking as well as light fixtures moving in response to the earthquake. Later, residents were left stunned by the sight and gathered in dark streets.
Some were transported to the hospital while others were taken on stretchers under the torchlight of a mobile phone.
Quetta, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck in 1935 killed between 30,000 to 60,000 people. This was one of the most devastating quakes in South Asia’s recorded history.
