WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The Central Intelligence Agency announced on Thursday that it had created a new team to solely focus on China and its national security threats. It called it the greatest threat facing the United States.

The China Mission Center was formed “to address the global challenge posed by the People’s Republic of China that cuts across all of the Agency’s mission areas,” the CIA said in a statement.

William Burns, Director CIA, stressed the threat from China’s government and not its citizens. The goal of his mission was to consolidate the spy agency’s efforts on China.

Burns stated that the CMC would further enhance our collective efforts to confront the greatest geopolitical risk we face in 21st Century, an increasingly hostile Chinese government.

He stated that the CIA would not stop focusing on “an aggressive Russia”, “a provocative North Korea, and a hostile Iran”.
