LONDON — Comcast’sSky, a European Pay-TV provider, has introduced Sky Glass, a smart TV.

Sky claims that customers will be able to stream Sky TV over the Internet without the use of a Sky Q set top box or satellite dish.

This is Sky’s biggest hardware announcement since its inception. Sky competes with Amazon and Netflix on content. acquired by Philadelphia-based Comcast in 2018For as low as $39 billion

At a London event, the TV was announced that it will launch in Europe next year.

Sky Glass provides streaming TV with Sky inside. It integrates hardware, software, and content,” Dana Strong, Sky’s group chief executive, stated in a statement.

This TV comes with the Amazon Fire dogle and Apple TV. It is available in five colors as well as three sizes, including small 43″ medium 55″ or large 65″.

The smallest option will be priced from £13 ($17.7) per month in the U.K., while the medium option will be an additional £4 a month and the largest will be an extra £8. They can also be bought outright for £649, £849 and £1,049 respectively.

One caveat is that customers must also pay an additional £26 a month at least for access to Sky’s content through the television.

Compatibility

Sky also stated that other services like Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer can be accessed via the TV.

Sky Glass is a glass that can be switched on simply by saying “Hello Sky”, and has a 4K Ultra HD LCD screen with over 1 billion colors.

Brian Roberts, Comcast’s CEO, stated in an interview to Sky News that the move is an “offensive”, as opposed to defensive.

Roberts stated that Sky Glass “all of the technology Comcast and Sky worked on over a decade.”

He said, “All wires gone. The boxes have all been destroyed. It can be spoken to. You can talk to it. It immediately shows you what it is. It allows you to switch between music and exercise, television or news.

Sky Glass camera

Sky announced that a new smart 4K camera with chat, gaming, and exercise capabilities will be available for Sky Glass 2022.

Paolo Pescatore is a technology and media analyst for PP Foresight. He told CNBC that “the end of the TV set top-box” was finally upon us.

According to him, the possibility of receiving premium Sky without the need for a satellite dish makes the service more attractive for householders.

Sky also has new revenue streams with better margins, Pescatore stated, noting that Sky could introduce “dual or triple play bundles”, which include gigabit and fast fiber connectivity.

Pescatore explained that “it’s difficult for rivals to fight head-on given Sky’s dominance TV and position as an aggregater of key streaming service services.”

Many consumers are hesitant to buy TVs that have too many software programs. The hardware may not be able to handle software updates, which can cause the television to slow down.

Sky stated that Sky Glass can be syndicated by subscription television operators and telcos.

It added that the Foxtel Group in Australia, a subscription television company, would be its first syndication partner.
