STOCKHOLM, (Reuters) – The award-giving body announced that Abdulrazak Gurnah, a Tanzanian novelist and poet, has won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature.
Gurnah is a novelist whose works include “Desertion” and “Paradise”. He lives in Britain and writes English.
The Swedish Academy awards the prize. It is worth 10,000,000 Swedish crowns (1.14 million).
Alfred Nobel, a wealthy Swedish businessman and inventor of dynamite, left a legacy that created the Nobel prizes for science, literature, and peace. The prizes have been presented since 1901. However, the most recent addition to the list is economics.
Past winners included novelists, such as Ernest Hemingway, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Toni Morrison. Poets, such as Joseph Brodsky, Pablo Neruda, RabindranathTagore and Joseph Brodsky are also among the past winners.
Writers have won awards for writing that includes short fiction, journalism, and essays. Bertrand Russell was awarded for his philosophy while Winston Churchill received the prize for his memoirs. Bob Dylan won for his lyrics. American poet Louise Gluck won last year’s award.
The Nobel Literature Award generates much more attention than the money or prestige. It often leads to book sales, and introduces lesser-known winners into a wider international audience.
