Texas schools remove children’s books branded ‘critical race theory’ By Reuters

[ad_1]

(Reuters) – Two Jerry Craft graphic novels were removed from Texas schools by parents after they complained that his books taught critical race theory. Local television station KPRC said this was possible because of a recent state law.

According to Katy Independent Schools District in Houston, almost 89,000 students attend the district. NBC News reported Wednesday that Craft had been suspended from a virtual appearance Craft planned to make to grade-school students.

District has ignited the most recent controversy about critical race theory. This once-obscure academic concept has terrified white conservatives and they have rallied against banning it from schools. They are concerned it understates America’s racist past. This theory examines the possibility that American institutions are inherently racist and is taught mainly in law schools.

Texas’ Sept. 1, 2009 law restricts school discussions on race and history. Greg Abbott, Republican Governor of Texas, said that this law was an “strong step to abolish critical racism theory”.

Craft’s novel “New Kid,” and the sequel, “Class Act,” tell the story of minorities who enroll at a predominantly white private school. According to his website, Craft has received the Newbery Medal as well the Coretta Scott King Author Award (and the Kirkus Prize).

KPRC stated that Katy Schools “temporarily” removed books from libraries. Citing a district spokesperson, KPRC claimed. NBC reported that Craft’s scheduled appearance for Monday had been postponed, citing a representative from the district.

Reuters was unable to reach Katy school officials on Wednesday night.

Bonnie Anderson, one parent who opposed the book, said to KPRC that it was inappropriate instructional material.

Anderson stated that the books do not say “We don’t want white children feeling like oppressors” but it is what they will do.

Harper Collins’ publicist, Craft, did not immediately respond to our requests for comment. Craft posted last week on Twitter (NYSE.): “???????? Craft wrote last week on Twitter (NYSE:) “?????????”
