KABUL, (Reuters) – A blast ripped through a mosque in Afghanistan’s northeastern Kunduz region on Friday. It left many dead and injured, Taliban officials stated.
The footage captured bodies being surrounded by debris in the mosque, which is used daily by members of the minor Shi’ite Islamic community.
None of the attackers claimed immediate responsibility. After several other attacks in Kabul in recent weeks including one on a mosque there, the Sunni Muslim militants from Islamic State claimed some responsibility for this blast.
Unidentified Taliban officials spoke under oath to say that 28 were dead and many more had been injured in the blast on Friday.
Security challenges have been highlighted by the Taliban. They took control in August of the country and since have carried out operations in Kabul against Islamic State cell.
Zabihullah Mojahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson on Twitter said: “This afternoon an explosion occurred at a mosque belonging to our Shiite compatriots… which resulted in many of our compatriots being martyred or wounded.”
