WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Senator Mitch McConnell is now known for being the Republican genius in Congress. He offered Democrats a temporary agreement to avert a catastrophic U.S. credit default, and protect the Senate’s threatened super-majority rule.

Kentucky Republican, aged 79, had insisted that Democrats used a lengthy procedure to increase the debt ceiling. He offered to temporarily extend the limit into December, after U.S. Treasury declared it was out of cash to pay its bills until Oct. 18.

Democrats readily agreed and declared victory https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-senate-democrats-republicans-haggle-over-short-term-debt-fix-2021-10-07 after the agreement passed the Senate by a 50-48 majority on Thursday.

McConnell finally got to McConnell, and finally said to him: “Hey Mitch. Are you really ready to sink both the American and global economies? Independent Senator Bernie Sanders spoke to reporters Friday.

McConnell did not agree to the terms of the agreement, but he was asked if he would be at an advantage in any future battles.

“Republican leadership was blinking. “I think that was an error,” Republican Senator Ted Cruz said to reporters Thursday.

However, Republican strategists and aides believe the result could increase the party’s leverage against President Joe Biden’s multitrillion dollar social spending package. Democrats are hoping to pass it in the next weeks.

Republicans fear that Democrats may find it more difficult to reach consensus on legislation because of the debt ceiling debate.

Alex Conant, Republican strategist, stated that “Forcing Democrats into including the debt ceiling under the (Biden Agenda) fight might prove to be a very good strategy.”

McConnell’s strategies were credited to a Republican aide for securing the “filibuster,” a super-majority rule that only 60 votes is required in order to move most legislation through the chamber of 100. This has allowed Republicans to stop many Democratic initiatives.

McConnell is under pressure right now from Republican allies from former President Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly called for McConnell to be removed from his post.

Senator Lindsey Graham, NYSE:), denounced McConnell’s deal as a “complete surrender” and added that “We had an approach but we abandoned it.”
