Nordic countries are restricting the use of Moderna’s Covid vaccine

THL (Finnish national health agency) announced that the suspension of Moderna’s Covid vaccination in young men was being made by THL. The offer would be made to all males 30 years old or less. Pfizer–BioNTechTHL recommended vaccine.
THL’s decision to discontinue the Moderna vaccination in certain demographics was taken after announcements by its Danish and Swedish counterparts.
The use of vaccines in Sweden will cease for people who were born after 1991. Denmark, however, has stopped the Moderna shot from anyone under 18.
How can we solve the problem?
Three countries decided to restrict the Moderna vaccination because of concerns that it might be connected to myocarditis. This is a condition in which the heart muscle gets inflamed. According to Reuters, all three authorities cited a unpublished Nordic study that was sent to the European Medicines Agency to be assessed.
Myocarditis is usually a mild condition that resolves quickly. However, in rarer and more serious cases there may be some damage to the heart.
According to Finland’s THL, myocarditis is most common in boys and younger men who have received the second dose of Moderna vaccine.
Talking at coronavirusTHL director Mika Salminen (director of health security), said Thursday that younger males are more at risk from the Moderna vaccination.
According to him, “THL’s directives are that Moderna should not be administered to boys and men under 30 years of age for the moment, but that Pfizer should be used in its place.” local media reports
All people over 12 years old in Finland can receive Covid-19 vaccines. Finland provides Covid-19 vaccines for everyone over 12 years old. 84% of the population is eligible to receive their first dose. 72% have had two doses.
Sweden’s health body, meanwhile, said data suggested that instances of myocarditis and pericarditis — an inflammation of the outer lining of the heart — were higher among young people who had been immunized, Reuters reported Wednesday
CNBC reached Moderna’s spokesperson but she was not available immediately for comment. According to Moderna, these cases are typically mild and people tend to heal quickly after standard treatment and rest.
According to the spokesperson, myocarditis risks are significantly higher for people who have contracted COVID-19. Therefore vaccination is the best method of protecting against them.
Advantages vs. Risks
THL’s Salminen stated Thursday that despite the potential risks, it is still vital for all who are eligible to get two doses of vaccine.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the risks associated with Covid-19 and the potentially serious complications outweigh any chance of experiencing an adverse reaction. There is also the risk of developing myocarditis.
A August report was published. U.S. study found that males between the ages of 12 and 17 — the demographic most likely to develop myocarditis — were six times more likely to suffer heart inflammation from being infected with Covid-19 than from being vaccinated against the virus.
There were 67 cases in the age group of myocarditis after a second shot of vaccine. Study found that the incidence of myocarditis increased to 450 cases per thousand after the patient contracted the coronavirus.
In the meantime, researchIn March, Imperial College London found out that 50% of those hospitalized for severe Covid cases were left with heart damage.
U.S. CDC says that the majority of cases of myocarditis after vaccination occur in young men and adolescents who have received a second dose. Symptoms — which include pain or tightness in the chest, shortness of breath and heart palpitations — usually occur within days of vaccination.
