Spirit Airlines CEO prepares staff for federal Covid vaccine mandate

Spirit AirlinesTed Christie, the CEO of the company, advised staff that they get immunized against Covid-19 in preparation for federal mandates regarding large-scale vaccines.

Joe Biden, the President of the United States announced last month that mandatory vaccines will be mandated for companies with over 100 employees.

Christie wrote in a staff email to clarify that Covid-19 vaccine or testing will be mandatory for businesses with over 100 employees. This was also reviewed by CNBC.

Christie indicated that implementation will depend on the guidance of government officials, “but we’ll be moving ahead with new safety and health policies in every case.”

Spirit has its rivals American Airlines JetBlue Airways Alaska Airlines Southwest AirlinesFederal contractors have stricter requirements and are not allowed to use the same testing method as federal contractors. According to these airlines, employees were informed by the airline over two weeks that they had to be immunized in order for them comply with contractor rules.

Miramar’s-based airline said it confirmed the email, and that they would be providing more information in the following weeks. Spirit requested that staff provide attestations regarding their vaccination status in order to determine how many have been inoculated. These forms are still being collected by the discount airline.

The airline has more than 8,700 employees at the end 2020. It is still processing pilots, flight attendants, and other staff this year.

JetBlue Airways from New York told staff that this week they had “examined the possibility of an extension to time to comply, but the federal Government has indicated that it’s not pushing back on the date so it’s important for Crewmembers plan to have their vaccines complete by December 8, 2008.”
