WASHINGTON (Reuters] – Texas has asked an appeals court Friday to reinstate a state-wide ban on abortions. The law was temporarily blocked by a federal magistrate this week.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sought an emergency stay from the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals by Tuesday morning of the preliminary injunction against Robert Pitman.

Pitman on Wednesday put the law on hold. The law prohibits women obtaining abortions after six weeks.

It is part of an ongoing legal battle for abortion access rights in the United States. Many states have pursued restrictions.

Texas was sued by the U.S. Justice Department on September 9th. The Department sought a temporary injunction. It argued that Texas’ law violates its Constitution. In a vote of 5-4, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the law to take effect Sept. 1.
