WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The White House will consider a broad oversight of cryptocurrency markets to counter the increasing threat from ransomware. A spokeswoman for the White House said Friday that the White House was considering a comprehensive review of this market.

The White House National Security Council spokesperson said that the NSC and NEC were working together across agencies to find ways to ensure cryptocurrency and digital assets don’t get used for ransomware crimesters.

Bloomberg News reported that oversight could also include an executive or legislative order. A spokesperson did not say whether or not an executive order would be included in such oversight.

Ransom software works by encrypting victims’ data. In exchange for bitcoin payments of up to hundreds of millions or more, hackers usually offer the key to victims.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden said top U.S. national security advisers will gather officials from 30 countries this month with plans to combat the growing threat of ransomware and other cyber crime https://reut.rs/3Do2vDj.

Biden stated that an online meeting hosted by White House National Security Council would also aim to “improving law enforcement cooperation” in areas like “the illicit usage of cryptocurrency.”
