Why a malaria vaccine in Africa will reignite the fight against disease

Even though the vaccine is approved by FDA for the first time, 30% of it remains ineffective. The four-dose regimen requires four injections. They also fade within six months.
But scientists believe that it will be a pivotal moment in the fight against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. It is home to the largest number of malaria-related deaths in the world each year, at around 400,000.
Colin Sutherland is a professor of parasitology at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He explained to CNBC that low-income children living in areas with high malaria transmission would typically experience multiple bouts of the disease every rainy season or throughout the year.
Sutherland stated that “the public health impact of severe illness or even death is not only in a small percentage”, but also chronic or repeated infections which can lead to fatigue, anemia, low school attendance, decreased learning opportunities, and impaired cognition.
In this context, vaccines that offer protection of three to six month at 30% could have very positive public health effects.”

Sutherland suggested the discovery could lead to greater progress in fighting malaria, providing resources remain devoted both to control and prevention as well to vaccine development.
The new data shows that RTS.S when used in conjunction with seasonal antimalarial medicine, reduces hospitalizations and deaths by approximately 70%.
Sutherland stated that the future prospects for malaria vaccines using the same RNA-based technology used in the Sutherland was also positive. Pfizer–BioNTech ModernaCovid-19 vaccines have “excellent” and opened up “very exciting avenues in vaccine research.
Strong partnerships are essential for pharmaceutical development of tropical disease vaccines. “In fact, the co-operation of academia and pharma with innovative funding mechanisms has resulted in significant funding increases (from the USA, EU and other countries) and success for malaria vaccine (and Covid vaccine).”
“It is therefore imperative that government funding be maintained, especially in areas such as global health and where profit margins are low.”
