Pakistan nuclear scientist AQ Khan, at centre of proliferation scandal, dies By Reuters

KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters] – Abdul Qadeer Khan of Pakistan was a Pakistani scientist and nuclear expert who claimed to be part of a nuclear proliferation ring. He was 85.

Khan was admitted on August 26 to Khan Research Laboratories Hospital after testing positive to COVID-19. Later, he was transferred to a military hospital Rawalpindi according to the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

The scandal surrounding global nuclear proliferation in 2004 involved Khan’s sale of nukes to Iran, North Korea, and Libya. Khan made a confession to national television but was not pardoned. He remained in house arrest for several years at his palace Islamabad residence.

Khan admitted that he did not know of state officials and acted by himself. He later claimed that he had been made the scapegoat.

In a tweet, Pakistani President Arif alvi stated that “he helped us develop nation saving nuclear deterrence”
