WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States claimed on Sunday that the talks at the first face to face meeting of senior U.S. officials and Taliban officials since August’s retaking of power in Afghanistan were professional and candid.
However, the U.S. side emphasized that the Taliban would not be judged solely on their words but also by its actions.
The State Department stated that the U.S. delegation to Doha discussed security and terror concerns as well safe passage for U.S. citizens and Afghans. It also addressed human rights and meaningful participation by women and girls within all aspects of Afghan society.
The statement said that the parties also talked about the United States’ provision of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.
