AstraZeneca antibody drug important as preventative COVID-19 therapy

(Reuters:) AstraZeneca’s senior executive claimed Monday that COVID-19, an AstraZeneca drugmaker (NASDAQ:), would offer a greater chance of preventing coronavirus infective disease than its use as a therapy. This was after both trials had shown promise.

“I don’t think treatment is where we are going to be competing,” Mene Pangalos, executive vice president for bio-pharmaceuticals R&D at AstraZeneca, said during a media briefing.

It’s great that this is possible in the treatment setting. It will also be available in the treatment environment if and when it is approved. However, the main difference with this antibody will be in the prophylactic environment,” he stated.

The risk of death from severe COVID-19 and COVID-19 was reduced by half with the experimental monoclonal antibody therapy, AZD7442. This treatment is for patients not admitted to hospital who had been suffering symptoms since seven days in a late stage trial.

Pangalos said that Anglo–Swedish drugmaker Pangalos would use existing supply chains for the manufacture of antibodies, and would have stocks online before the end of this year. The supplies would be ready to go at the time approvals are made.
