STOCKHOLM, (Reuters) – Economists Joshua Angrist, David Card and Guido Imbens have been awarded the Nobel Economics Prize 2021, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Monday.

This prize is also known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize for Economic Sciences in Memory Alfred Nobel. It sees 10 million Swedish Crowns (or $11.4 million) divided among the winner.

The academy awarded half of the prize to Canada-born Card “for his empirical contributions in labour economics”. Angrist, Imbens and the rest of the prize went to Imbens “for their methodological contributions in the analysis causal relations”.

Alfred Nobel, a wealthy Swedish businessman and inventor of dynamite, created the prestigious Nobel Prizes for Achievements in Science, Literature and Peace.

These prizes have been handed out since 1901. However, the economics prize was added in 1969 after a gift from Sweden’s central banking.

Although the award for economics has been largely overlooked by the many well-known winners of literature and peace prizes, it is home to a variety of highly influential economists over the years like Milton Friedman from the USA and Friedrich August von Hayek from Austria.
