BEIJING, (Reuters) – China, world’s largest auto market, announced Monday that it would implement assessment measures to control data exported by cars to other countries. This is part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard data privacy and data security.

Automakers and tech companies collect more vehicle data, which raises privacy and security issues.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology didn’t provide details on how assessment would take place. Current regulations prohibit auto companies from exporting key vehicle data outside of China without regulatory approval.

According to the ministry, regulators will increase vehicle data security monitoring and encourage telecom companies to invest in cybersecurity technologies.

This move is in keeping with China’s efforts to protect data. The proliferation of electric cars like Tesla (NASDAQ:), raises concerns about national security.

Beijing became increasingly concerned about the data mountains amassed in private companies and whether these information might be used or attacked by foreign countries. China recently introduced a new law on data security and tightened its supervision in similar areas.
