MANILA, Reuters – The Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte congratulated Maria Ressa on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. He called it “a victory in a Filipina”, which it was glad to witness.
Ressa, founder of Philippine news site Rappler, and Dmitry Muratov shared the 2021 prize https://www.reuters.com/world/philippines-journalist-ressa-russian-journalist-muratov-win-2021-nobel-peace-2021-10-08/?enowpopup after braving the wrath of the leaders of the Philippines and Russia to expose corruption and misrule.
Ressa has faced multiple legal challenges at courts due to Rappler’s relentless investigative reporting about Duterte’s government and bloody war against drugs.
According to Harry Roque, the presidential spokesperson for Harry Roque at a regular news conference responding to questions about the significance of the award for the government, “It’s a victory for Filipina and that is very happy.”
He said that “Officially it’s true, there are people who feel Maria Ressa still needs to clear her name in front of the courts”, as he made his first comment about Friday’s decision from Duterte’s camp.
The firebrand leader has described Rappler, launched in 2012, as a “fake news outlet https://www.reuters.com/article/us-philippines-media-idUSKBN1F50HL” and a tool of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, which Ressa has dismissed as nonsense.
The Prize was hailed by many in the Philippines, with critics saying it is a rebuke on Duterte https://www.reuters.com/world/philippine-journalists-nobel-called-rebuke-duterte-who-remains-silent-2021-10-09, a frequent critic of Rappler.
The first Nobel Peace Prize for the Philippines was awarded to Muratov, and the first for journalists ever since the German Carl von Ossietzky received it in 1935. The Kremlin congratulated Muratov on Friday https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-welcomes-fact-that-editor-who-criticises-it-won-nobel-peace-prize-2021-10-08/?enowpopup, describing the investigative journalist as talented and brave.
Ressa advised Duterte not to follow the divide and conquer strategy when she was asked what her message to him would be.
I beg of you to unite the nation. She said this in an interview to ANC news channel.
