SEATTLE (Reuters) – Boeing (NYSE:) Co announced Tuesday that it saw an increase in domestic travel leading to an increase in airplane deliveries. However, its 787 program is still plagued with structural problems.
This was an increase of 13 planes compared to August, and 24 more than September 2013.
Last month’s delivery of 35 jetliners included 26 737 MAX passenger planes, and one P-8 maritime patrol airplane to the U.K. Royal Air Force.
Boeing is trying to recuperate billions of dollars lost in sales due to the coronavirus pandemic and moves beyond safety issues caused by two deadly 737 MAX crashes. This closely-watched monthly snapshot was taken as Boeing attempts to make a profit.
Boeing stated that 8 widebodies were delivered, one of which was a 747-8 freighter. United Parcel Service (NYSE;), FedEx Corp’s two 767 freighters (NYSE) and one U.S. Air Force 767 tanker.
Boeing delivered 261 aircraft in the past year, more than the 206 that Boeing shipped a month earlier and the 98 it has delivered for the first nine months 2020.
These 194 included the best-selling 737 MAX aircraft, which were returned to service in 2020 after a nearly two-year safety ban.
Boeing is still struggling with structural problems in the larger 787 aircraft, which has caused them to reduce production and stop deliveries.
After cancellations, and cases where buyers converted orders for different types of aircraft, the total aircraft orders in September was 22.
These included 16 737 MAX and six 777 cargoers as well as a contract to purchase five P-8 airplanes for Germany’s Navy.
Boeing said Air Lease (NYSE) Corp cancelled an order to purchase one 787-9 while GECAS or GE Capital Aviation Services cancelled an order to buy four 737 MAX aircraft.
Boeing stated that this brings the total number of orders received for 2017 to 710 or 302 after conversions and cancellations.
