Ex-Myanmar president says army tried to force him to cede power hours before coup By Reuters

(Reuters). Tuesday’s testimony by Myanmar’s ex-president indicated that the military attempted to force him into surrendering power just hours before his February 1 coup. His lawyer said that he had been warned that he might be hurt if he didn’t comply.

Win Myint’s first testimony since his overthrow challenges the army’s assertion that no coup occurred and that that power was lawfully given to generals by an interim president.

Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi were both present at Tuesday’s trial. They are facing charges of incitement stemming out letters with their names sent to embassies asking them to not recognize the junta.

Win Myint was Myanmar’s chief of state. He told Naypitaw the court that senior military officers approached him Feb. 1, and asked him to resign because he was ill.

Khin Maung Zaw, defence lawyer, stated that the president rejected their offer, and that he is in good health. He did this in an English text message to reporters, which cited his testimony. He was warned by his officers that the refusal would bring him great pain, and the president replied that he’d rather die than agree to it.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for Myanmar’s ruling Military Council did not respond to calls.

Khin Maung Zaw stated that the defense rejected Win Myint’s and Suu Kyi’s charges, as they were held incommunicado.

Win Myint said that Suu Kyi and Suu Cyi have both denied multiple allegations against them. Suu Kyi, the defense lawyer representing them, suggested Tuesday’s testimony should be made publicly.

Three months after Suu Kyi’s party won a stunning landslide victory, Myanmar is still ravaged by violence and economic paralysis.

According to the generals, fraud was a major factor in election results that threatened sovereignty of the country.

Myint Swe (a former officer in the army) was elected vice president and was immediately able to give power to military personnel to manage a state-of- emergency.

Public disclosure has been withheld by the junta about how Myint Swe took over Win Myint’s presidency.
