MOSCOW (Reuters). Russia is testing a nasal spray version of the Sputnik V vaccination against COVID-19 with adult volunteers. This comes as Russia struggles to control rising rates of deaths and infections.

Russia developed and launched the Sputnik vaccination quickly in response to the outbreak of coronavirus last year. But, Russians are slow to take up the vaccine. Many Russians fear new medicines and distrust the authorities.

According to the St Petersburg state register of medicine document, two nasal spray doses will be given in St Petersburg. It is not clear when the clinical trials are to take place.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin declared Tuesday that Russia should accelerate its COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The country had just recorded its worst single-day death rate since the beginning of the pandemic.

Russian officials stated that a nasal spray vaccine for children between 8 and 12 years old had been developed. The new product was expected to be launched in September.
