Amazon India reportedly copied products and rigged search results

According to an article, Amazon’s India Private Brands Program team described how they would analyze customer reviews and sales data in order to determine “reference brands” that it could replicate.

According to Reuters, Amazon workers noticed an increase in the returns of shirts made by its private-label brands. This was due to sizing problems. According to reports, the team found an outstanding brand and adjusted its shirt’s fit to suit its dimensions.

According to Reuters, Amazon India teams also helped to increase the visibility of private labels products through search results. This was done using a combination called “search seeding”, and “sparkles.” “Search seeding” was a technique that allowed Amazon to guarantee that its new products would be the first or third result from search queries. While “sparkles,” are banners located at the top of search results, Reuters reports.

Reuters stated that several high-ranking Amazon executives were informed about the Indian business practices by Diego Piacentini and Russell Grandinetti. Piacentini was under the direct supervision of CEO Andy Jassy. Grandinetti also reports to Jeff Bezos as executive chairman.

Reuters’ findings are directly contrary to Amazon’s prior messaging regarding how it produces its private label products. AmazonBasics has been launching its private label products for many years under the AmazonBasics brand. This includes everything furniture-related to clothing. Amazon also sells private-label products under different brand names.

Amazon has been a source of controversy for businesses that sell products through Amazon. some allegingAmazon directly shipped their merchandise.

Amazon executivesBezos, along with others, have stated that using data collected from third-party sellers to develop future products is against their company policy. Bezos told a Congressional committeeAmazon adopted a policy protecting seller data against employee access in July 2020.

Bezos stated at that time, “If someone violated it we would take actions.”

Amazon representatives didn’t respond immediately to our request for comment.
