WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The White House announced Wednesday that the preliminary draft of President Joe Biden’s report to the commission investigating potential changes in the U.S. Supreme Court such as increasing the number or imposing term limits will be released on Thursday.

In April, Biden signed an executive decree establishing the commission. The commission held its inaugural meeting in April.

Commission is currently examining the possibility of creating an appointment for a set term or expanding the number of justices to nine.

After Donald Trump’s four-year tenure as a Republican, the Supreme Court now has a conservative majority of 6-3. Trump, in 2017, was able fill the vacant seat that was left open by Barack Obama. However, Senate Republicans had in 2016 stopped Obama from naming Merrick Garland as his nominee.

During the current term of its Supreme Court, it is currently considering cases in which its conservative majority may restrict abortion rights and expand gun rights.

Republicans opposed expanding the justices’ number, which they refer to as “court packing”. Democrats say that the court’s current composition doesn’t reflect the will and aspirations of Americans.

After a conservative court blocked his efforts to lift America from the Great Depression, the last serious attempt at court expansion was made in 1930s by Democratic President Franklin Roosevelt.

Jen Psaki spoke on behalf of the White House to inform reporters that Thursday’s draft report would be published by the Commission with a view toward biden submission in mid November.
