(Reuters) – Wednesday’s new U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidance aimed at reducing sodium in processed foods and lowering salt intake.

A high sodium intake may lead to elevated blood pressure, which can increase your risk of stroke and heart disease.

The US average sodium intake is 3,400mg per day, which is higher than 2,300mg recommended by “The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025.”

The FDA states that more than 70% of sodium intake comes from sodium added in food manufacturing or commercial food preparation.
