REUTERS/Leah Millis/File photoWASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee that is investigating the Jan. 6 deadly riot at Capitol will bring criminal contempt cases against anyone who fails to comply with subpoenas. This was the statement by Representative Liz Cheney on Tuesday, which she chairs.
Four former Trump administration officials were subpoenaed by the committee last month. These were Trump’s former chief staff Mark Meadows and Steve Bannon. They also included former White House adviser Steve Bannon. Former White House Chief of Staff Dan Scavino was also involved. Kash Patel, a former official in the Defense Department, was subpoenaed by the committee late last month.
Bannon has been threatened with criminal contempt by the committee for not cooperating in an inquiry into the attack. In which, a mob led by Trump’s supporters stormed a U.S. government building.
Subpoenaed people will be given the chance to respond, but the committee can enforce their subpoenas. Cheney, a Republican told reporters at Capitol that if they don’t, the subpoenas will be enforced. Together with Democratic Representative Bennie Thompson, they lead the committee.
Cheney stated that “In general people will have to appear or we will move contempt cases against them.” The entire committee agreed on this point, she said.
Cheney stated that the committee expects to receive depositions from Meadows & Patel this week. We’ll wait to see if they turn up. “If they turn up, then we’ll be prepared,” she stated.
While Congress was meeting in order to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s win, the riot started. It delayed that process for many hours while then-Vice president Mike Pence, Congress members, staff, and journalists fled. The incident has led to the arrest of more than 600 individuals.
House Democrats formed this committee against the objections ofTrump’s fellow Republicans. Cheney is among two Republicans who make up the committee.
