The United States will lift restrictions at its land borders with Canada and Mexico for fully vaccinated foreign nationals in early November, ending historic curbs on non-essential travelers in place since March 2020 to address the Covid-19 pandemic, two U.S. officials said on Tuesday.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, on Wednesday will announce that the new rules will affect land border crossings and ferry crossings. In a phone call, they said that the rules were similar to those previously announced for international passengers on air travel.

New York State lawmakers praised this move.

“Since then, the Pandemic has brought pain to our cross-border communities. In a statement, Chuck Schumer, Senate Democratic Leader said that this pain was about to end.

According to President Joe Biden’s officials, the White House will not lift “Title 42”, which was imposed by the former President Donald Trump’s government and has effectively closed off asylum access for many thousands of migrants who are trying to reach Mexico from Mexico.

One official said that the exact date when restrictions will be lifted in November will be revealed “very soon”.

Canada on Aug. 9 began allowing fully vaccinated U.S. visitors for non-essential travel.

The U.S. will allow non-essential foreigners to travel across U.S. soil borders, including tourists, once the restrictions are removed. The officials stated that essential travelers, such as truck drivers, will need to get vaccinated in the United States to allow them to travel across land border borders.

U.S. legislators have been pressing the White House for lifting restrictions that barred Canadians from crossing the north U.S. frontier since March 2020. Many border communities have been hard hit by this closure. Mexico also asked the Biden administration for an easement of restrictions.

On Sept. 20, the White House declared that travel restrictions would be lifted by the United States for travelers coming from 33 countries, including Brazil, India and China. This includes most European citizens who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Foreigners who travel to the United States on land or via ferry must be vaccinated. They will not have to present proof of vaccination unless they receive a referral from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Non-U.S. citizens will, on the other hand, need to prove that they have been immunized before they can board a flight. For foreign visitors who cross a land frontier, they will not have to provide proof that their COVID-19 tests are up-to-date.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Friday’s announcement stated that international visitors would be allowed to use COVID-19 vaccines which have been approved by U.S. regulators and/or the World Health Organization.

U.S. citizens are allowed to return home despite U.S. land borders restrictions.
