Athletics-Kenyan police arrest husband of dead Tirop By Reuters

NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) – Kenyan police announced on Thursday that they had taken away Agnes Tirop’s husband. Agnes Tirop was a distance runner who won bronze at the World Championships twice. She was discovered dead at her house.
According to police, Tirop was stabbed with a knife in the neck on Wednesday.
The 25-yearold representing Kenya in the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics finished fourth in that event.
Hours after asking Ibrahim Rotich for his surrender, the police claimed that they had captured Rotich at Mombasa’s coastal city.
“The suspect is being held at Changamwe station in Coast Region and has been taken into custody,” Tom Makori who was sub-commander of the Keiyo North police force, said to Reuters over telephone.
“I am able to confirm that we now have the main suspect in custody.”
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (NYSE:), Rotich was taken into custody after hitting his vehicle against a truck. He claimed that he wanted to escape from the country.
For more information on the crime, detectives from Changamwe are currently questioning the suspect.
“Before being arraigned, to answer to the murder charges,” said the directorate.
Tirop broke the German women’s 10 km world record last month. She crossed the line in Germany in just 30:01, shaved 28 seconds off the record held by Asmae Leghzaoui of Morocco in 2002.
Tirop was second in the Giants Geneva 10-K race, which took place in early October.
Bronze medals were awarded to her at the 2019 and 2017 World Championships in 10,000m. She also won the 2015 World Cross Country Championships.
Sebastian Coe, World Athletics president, said late on Wednesday that the sport had lost “one of its brightest young stars” in a statement.
Uhuru Kenyatta the Kenyan president requested an immediate investigation into Tirop’s sudden death.
“I’m deeply shocked by the tragic death of Agnes Tirop, a young and bright talent. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee said that Agnes Tirop’s performances at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games gave hope to many. He made the comments via the Olympics Twitter account.
Television footage taken by Reuters revealed Tirop’s devastated friends and relations leaving her house. Meanwhile, police used a cordon in order to stop others from coming to investigate.
Milka Chemwos from Athletics Kenya said, “The girl is so cheerful that in fact she traveled with us to Nairobi on the day we were returning home from Tokyo.”
“Even Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. She was available to speak to me by phone, and I planned to meet her in person. Tirop’s passing is tragic.
