Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee On Antitrust said Thursday that she would soon present a major antitrust legislation aimed at Big Tech with Judiciary Committee Ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

American Innovation and Choice Online Act (which shares some similarities and features with a bill by House Judiciary chairman David Cicilline D-R.I.) would prevent dominant online platforms participating in discriminatory behaviour. It could be that the platforms use their gatekeeper powers to discriminate against their rivals, or prefer their own products to those of others.

For companies such as GE, the bill could have significant implications. Amazon Apple GoogleEach company has its own online marketplace for information or products. In an effort to increase profits, these companies are accused of ranking their own products higher that those of competitors.

Amazon third-party sellers have been suspicious that the platform ranks their products higher than those of its competitors. Local search and travel sites such as Yelp TripadvisorSome users have claimed that Google favors Google Maps over their links in search results. Both platforms denied the allegations and said that they made their decision based upon user feedback.

“Congress as well as tech companies have lots of work to accomplish the Internet better and safer. But instead of that, this bill takes aim at tech products that customers love,” stated Adam Kovacevich (CEO of Chamber of Progress), a middle-left organization supported by Amazon and Apple. FacebookGoogle among other companies. It won’t make the Internet more enjoyable for families by preventing Amazon from selling Amazon Basics or banning Google Maps from search results.

Klobuchar claimed in a statement the bill would allow consumers to have more options.

“Big Tech has evolved and changed over time, but our laws haven’t changed to keep them fair and competitive,” Grassley stated in a statement. Big Tech must be accountable for discriminatory behavior. This bill will create an equal playing field for small businesses and allow them to compete on these platforms.

The bill has Democratic co-sponsors Sens. Dick Durbin D-Ill. Richard Blumenthal D-Conn. Cory Booker D-N.J. and Republican cosponsors Lindsey Graham R-S.C. John Kennedy R-La. and Cynthia Lummis R-Wyo.
