LA PALMA (Reuters – On Wednesday night, more people had to flee their homes as molten rocks poured from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano.
The eruption is still in its fourth week. Authorities expect the lava flows to continue to flow northwestwards, as it has not yet reached the boundaries of the evacuated areas.
Most residents had left the region by Wednesday morning, and only 10 to 15 people escaped their homes on Wednesday, according to emergency services.
The eruption caused nearly 600 hectares of destruction. Authorities also said the cement plant, which released toxic fumes early in the week and the banana and avocado plantations were destroyed.
The Spanish National Geographic Institute reported that a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the island on Thursday morning. Since the eruption, La Palma has been experiencing tremors almost every day.
Around 6,000 people were evacuated from the island, which is home to 83,000 residents.
