MILAN (Reuters – Italy’s new ITA Airways aims for an alliance with airlines next year, according to the Chairman of Alitalia.
Alitalia flew its final flight Thursday as part of SkyTeam, along with Air France and KLM. ITA must negotiate a pact and may choose to join forces with other Star Alliance members and Lufthansa.
Chairman Alfredo Altavilla declared, “I am open for negotiations with everyone” at the digital launch event of the airline. The ITA was created as a strategic component in one the many large networks in the sector.
Altavilla stated that “ITA cannot be a standalone carrier for ever,” but he added that the new carrier wouldn’t sacrifice Rome Fiumicino or Milan Linate airport hubs in order to please a potential partner.
Friday saw the start of ITA flying instead of Alitalia after this airline, once a symbol for Italian glamour and style, was grounded.
Alitalia bought the brand, but the airline will still fly the jets in a blue livery. The details include traditional green-white and red from the Italian flag.
