(Reuters). Alex Murdaugh of South Carolina is being charged with embezzling settlement funds in relation to the 2018 murder of his housekeeper.

Curtis Edward Smith killed Murdaugh, 53. According to police, he admitted last month that he had arranged Smith’s shooting; he was also charged with insurance fraud. He was released on bail.

Murdaugh’s lawyer claimed that Murdaugh planned the shooting due to depression after his wife died and the murder of another son.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), announced that Murdaugh was arrested in Florida Thursday. These charges are related to an investigation into Murdaugh’s misappropriation settlement funds following the death of Gloria Satterfield, Murdaugh’s housekeeper.

As he was exiting an Orlando drug rehab facility, agents arrested him. He was booked into a local jail where he will await a decision from a judge whether or not he may be sent home to South Carolina.

Court records show that the housekeeper, who was a Murdaugh resident, died after an “trip-and-fall” incident in 2018.

As new information emerges about the Murdaugh case, national attention has focused on it. It concerns a South Carolina lawyer whose family was a prominent part of South Carolina’s legal community over decades.

Murdaugh’s attorneys stated in a Thursday statement that Murdaugh would cooperate fully with the investigation. They also said that Murdaugh regretted having distracted from solving the crime of his son and wife.

In September, police also said they were investigating Murdaugh after his former employer, local law firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth, & Detrick, alleged he had misappropriated funds.
