U.S. Capitol Police officer charged with telling rioter to destroy evidence By Reuters

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – Federal prosecutors have accused a U.S. Capitol Police Officer of urging a Jan. 6 attacker on the government building in order to demolish Facebook (NASDAQ;) photos showing him inside. They warned that he might be charged.

Prosecutors stated that Michael Riley was a Capitol Police Officer for over 25 years and had made a friend on Facebook with “Person 1” (Jan. 1), then sent a direct message to the person on January 7.

Riley stated in his message, “Hey (Person 1),” Riley added that he was a member of the Capitol Police Department who shares your political beliefs. Take out the section about the building being under investigation. Everyone who is in that building will be arrested.”

On Jan. 6, hundreds of Trump supporters stormed Capitol Building in an unsuccessful attempt to overturn Trump’s defeat. Fourteen people were killed in violence and more than 100 cops sustained injuries. Additionally, four of the officers that day committed suicide had been part of the group.

Prosecutors allege Riley had exchanged “dozens of” messages on Jan. 7 with the suspect in the Riot. One message included a comment to his Facebook friend, “Im glad that you came out unscathed.” Over 50 officers were injured, many of them very serious.

Riley was not available for comment immediately, but he would be appearing in court on Friday.
