(Reuters). Robert Durst was sentenced by his lawyer to life in prison this week for killing a close friend in 2000.
Durst appeared sickly at Thursday’s sentencing, lawyer Dick DeGuerin said to the Times.
Durst (78) was being cared for in a hospital not known. Durst, who was due to be tried at USC Medical Center in Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department custody, was currently there.
Durst was sentenced for 2000 murder of Susan Berman. This is a long-delayed penalty for someone who eluded the law for over 39 years.
Durst is a multimillionaire who was the grandfather of one of New York City’s top real estate companies. Durst has been a suspect for many years but was never tried in connection with Kathleen McCormack’s disappearance in New York. McCormack went missing from New York City in 1982.
Durst was found guilty by a jury last month for shooting Berman (55) in the back. The incident occurred at Berman’s Beverly Hills residence. He was also found guilty in the Special Circumstances of Lying in Wait and Killing a Witness, both of which carry a life sentence that is mandatory without parole.
The evidence from the trial showed that Berman provided Durst with false information about McCormack’s disappearance. Berman was accused of being a covert killer by Durst, who feared that she would expose what she knew to the authorities.
