Exxon threatened strike action by locking out the approximately 650 employees representing unions at Exxon’s plant. REPORTHOUSTON (Reuters). Exxon Mobil Managers at Corp (NYSE:), called employees in Beaumont Texas on Friday to demand that a proposal for a contract be approved. This was according to a United Steelworkers union official.
Bryan Gross, an international union representative, stated that in addition to appealing to workers to reject the offer of contract ratification, they also provided information on a petition to decertify the USW.
Gross stated that six months ago, the company had locked him out. Gross said that they have not asked anyone about their employees and are now reaching out to say, “Trust us.”
A spokesperson for Exxon did not respond to our request immediately.
Exxon will hold a Tuesday vote regarding Exxon’s contract offer.
A Facebook post (NASDAQ:) Friday by the company indicated that the company would partner with the union in order to reach a back-to work agreement. This will allow USW-represented workers to be returned to the site. The lockout was ended.
U.S. National Labor Relations Board currently examines a petition by at least 30 percent of workers who are locked out, asking for decertification votes. It would eliminate the USW 13-243 Beaumont local union from being represented by workers if it is successful.
Exxon’s offer of a contract is opposed by USW. They claim it would remove job seniority that gives workers the right to choose their job assignments. Also, there wouldn’t be any separate agreements between workers at refineries and those working in lubricant plants.
Exxon stated that the agreement was necessary in order to keep the refinery viable even under low-margin conditions.
