(Reuters). A truck driver from Texas was convicted Friday night of vehicular homicide.

Rogel Lazaro-Mederos (25), was found guilty by a Jefferson County jury, Colorado of four counts homicide. There were more than twenty other charges including reckless driving, vehicular assault and careless driving that resulted in death.

On Dec. 13, he will be sentenced and could spend decades in prison.

Prosecutors stated that Aguilera Mederos, a defendant, knew his brakes had failed as he descended Interstate 70 West of Denver on April 15, 2019. According to the prosecutors, he was able to bypass four runaway truck ramps and weave recklessly in and out traffic until crashing into a 28-car pileup.

The truck-trailer was carrying lumber. When it burst into flames, more than 20 vehicles were engulfed in a fiery ball. This caused Interstate 70 to be closed for over a day.

Aguilera Mederos testified in his own defense. He said that he couldn’t control the vehicle after its brakes gave out and also stated that he tried to avoid other vehicles.

He confessed that he hadn’t driven through the Colorado Mountains before and stated that he “wishes it had been me” instead of victims.
