LA PALMA (Spanish) – The volcanic eruption that caused havoc on La Palma, Spain, about a month ago has not been stopped, according to President of the Canary Islands.

According to the Spanish National Geographical Institute, there were 42 seismic events on Sunday. The largest measured 4.3.

“There are no signs that an end of the eruption is imminent even though this is the greatest desire of everyone,” President Angel Víctor Torres said at a Socialist party conference in Valencia, citing the view of scientists.

Since the eruption of La Palma volcano on Sept. 19, 2011, lava flows have caused destruction to over 742 ha (1833 acres) and nearly 2000 buildings.

Nearly 7,000 people were forced from their homes by the authorities. The island has approximately 83,000 inhabitants.

Airline Binter stated that it cancelled all flights to La Palma from Monday through Sunday due to ash fallout from the volcano.

Aena, the state airport operator, said that nearly half of the flights from the island to Sunday were cancelled. However, the airport remains open.
