Seventeen U.S. missionaries and family kidnapped in Haiti

(Reuters) – 17 American Christian missionaries were abducted by gangsters in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince on Saturday, according to the New York Times. The New York Times cited security officers from the Caribbean crisis-engulfed nation.
According to local authorities, they were taken from their bus as they headed towards the airport to drop some of the missionaries off before heading on to another destination in Haiti.
The Americas’ poorest nation has seen a rise in violence from gangs, resulting in thousands of displacements and hindering economic activity. After the July assassination, violence spiralled following an August earthquake that killed more than 2,000.
A request to comment from the U.S Embassy in Haiti regarding this kidnapping occurred but was not answered by them.
