WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The Biden Administration’s Environmental Regulators will set enforceable limits for pollutants known as “forever chemical” in drinking water. This is one of several actions taken by the White House to combat the problem.

For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency will establish limits for certain perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl compounds (or PFAS) that remain in the environment. Scientists have linked PFAS to diseases such as cancer of the kidney.

According to a separate statement, the EPA anticipates that PFAS emissions from industrial sources will be restricted by the end of next year. The agency stated this in a separate document.

The EPA published a 3-year plan that outlines other measures to prevent PFAS being released into the atmosphere and food supply, and expand clean-up efforts.

Michael Regan, EPA Administrator, said that there is no question that the agency listens to its customers and holds polluters responsible.

Some manufacturers release the pollutants, along with certain industries that produce organic, plastics and synthesized fibers.

For decades, PFAS has been used in nonstick cookingware, stain and water-resistant textiles and rugs as well as in food packaging and industrial products. They are banned in many states.

According to the White House, the Defense Department has begun PFAS evaluations at 700 sites where chemicals may have been used. Initial assessments are expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The bipartisan infrastructure bill currently being debated in Congress contains $10 billion of grants for contaminants, including PFAS. It includes state revolving funding and programs that assist the disadvantaged. An even larger spending bill includes funding for the EPA for monitoring for PFAS chemicals in drinking water.
